Steve Slater

Steve Slater is the founder and lead musician for Harmony Monsters Music, and he is passionate about bringing interactive music to early childhood classrooms. Steve is a multi-instrumentalist who has been playing music for more than 30 years, successfully performing and composing in a range of genres.

In college, Steve studied percussion and excelled in every ensemble offered, including Big Band, Small Jazz Ensemble, Symphony and Concert Band, and he performed for numerous classes and programs. He pursued his first professional position as a percussion instructor at Allegro Music in Fremont in summer 2000 and has been teaching drums ever since. Soon after beginning to teach, he accepted a position as drum line coach at Mission San Jose High School and held that role for more than 20 years. Over time, Steve began songwriting, singing, and playing ukelele for his own children, which led him to establish an Alameda children’s band called The Dilly Dallies. He pursued additional training in children’s music and has developed an engaging curriculum specifically for early learners that he delivers in schools, libraries, and at community events around the Bay Area as Harmony Monsters Music.

In addition to running Harmony Monsters and working as a music instructor, Steve plays in a rock band, Aloha Screwdriver, and a jazz ensemble, Park Street Trio. He finds great joy in bringing music to people’s lives.
